Psoriasis Often Missed as Dandruff, Eczema or Fungal Infection
Reported by Manish Reddy (Senior Writer) · The Hindu - Health ·
Psoriasis, an autoimmune disease that produces thick, scaly patches, frequently escapes diagnosis because its look changes on different body parts. On the scalp the condition can resemble ordinary dandruff, while on the palms it may be confused with persistent eczema. A fungal infection is another common misidentification. These look‑alikes mean doctors cannot rely solely on visible skin to confirm psoriasis. The variation stems from the fact that skin thickness and texture differ across the body, influenced by local environmental exposure and the type of treatment applied. Such factors alter both the appearance and feel of psoriasis lesions, making a single visual cue unreliable. Recognising the range of possible presentations is essential for early medical attention, especially as modern biologic therapies have transformed psoriasis care. ## Context Understanding that psoriasis is autoimmune clarifies why it can mimic other disorders: the immune system attacks skin cells, causing rapid growth that varies with skin type and external conditions. This explains why the same disease may look like dandruff on the scalp yet appear as eczema on the hands.
