Director Ram Kamal Mukherjee won the Best Director award at the 11th International Indian Film Festival of Toronto for his Bengali film Lokkhikantopur Local. He shares this honour with veteran Bollywood filmmaker Kabir Khan, who also won Best Director for his film Chandu Champion starring Kartik Aaryan. Mukherjee previously won his first National Film Award in 2023 for his Hindi short film Ek Duaa.
Cast and Production
Sangita Sinha produced the film under the Angel Creations banner and also acts in it, noting that regional cinema faces financial limits but wins hearts through pure content. The film features a large cast including Rituparna Sengupta, Paoli Dam, Kaushik Ganguly, Indraneil Sengupta, Chandrayee Ghosh, Sayani Ghosh, John Bhattacharya, Rajnandini Paul, and Debashish Mondal. Lead actor Rituparna Sengupta praised Mukherjee's multilayered plot and handling of characters since his debut film Cakewalk. The movie also earned Chandrayee Ghosh the Best Supporting Actress prize at the West Bengal Film Journalists Awards 2026.
Context
Regional cinema in India often operates on smaller budgets compared to major Bollywood commercial releases, making international festival recognition vital for visibility. Film festivals offer independent and regional directors a global stage to showcase local stories to diverse audiences.
