Reported by Kavya Rao (Senior Writer) · The Hindu - National ·
Telangana has won central clearance for five new city development works worth three thousand eight hundred ninety-two crore rupees under a special federal fund. Municipal Administration and Urban Development Secretary T.K. Sreedevi shared details after a meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
Approved Projects
The National Apex Committee approved five distinct proposals during its fourth gathering. The largest item is a nearly two thousand crore rupee push for the second and third phases of a major regional water supply scheme managed by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board. Another major item is a fourteen hundred sixty-five crore rupee overhaul for rainwater drains across the Greater Warangal municipal area. Three smaller works also passed: a two hundred nine crore rupee plan to restore an old fort moat in Warangal, a one hundred sixty-nine crore rupee business district plan for Hanumakonda, and a fifty-seven point five crore rupee tourism and heritage upgrade for Alampur Temple Town.
Funding and Past Approvals
These latest additions bring Telangana's total sanctioned value under the Urban Challenge Fund to ninety-five hundred seventy-three crore rupees across eight total approvals. Funding for these works relies on a mix of public and private backing, including nearly forty-eight hundred eighty-six crore rupees through loans and public-private partnerships. The central government is set to provide over fifteen hundred crore rupees, while state and local bodies will chip in about twenty-three hundred ninety-three crore rupees. Earlier approvals included a major underground waste network for Warangal, a transformation plan for Karimnagar, and an artificial intelligence control center project in Khammam.
Context
These federally backed urban funds aim to help state governments build modern public works without putting all the financial pressure on local budgets. Using mixed funding models like loans and private partnerships allows large civic projects to move forward faster.
