Captain Shubman Gill confirmed India's top order for the upcoming five-match one-day series against New Zealand in Auckland. Gill will lead the side for the first three matches before stepping aside to prepare for the Test series, with Shreyas Iyer taking over as captain for the final two games. Gill stated that the top four spots are set with right-handed batters including Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Shreyas Iyer.
Batting Lineup
Positions five and six will remain flexible based on match situations. Gill explained that if a left-handed batter is needed after the top order, Axar Patel can come in to bat, or KL Rahul can be sent depending on the conditions, meaning those batting slots are not fixed. Addressing concerns about his recent neck pain, Gill clarified that he felt no discomfort or issues during a practice session lasting about an hour and a half of batting followed by fielding.
New Zealand Injuries
Meanwhile, the New Zealand team faces multiple injury setbacks ahead of the series. Star all-rounders Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman have already been ruled out of the entire series. Opener Devon Conway is now ruled out of the first one-day match after suffering a concussion during a practice session when he collided with teammate Matt Henry while attempting to catch a high catch on Tuesday.
Match Preparations
Both Conway and Henry received immediate medical treatment on the field for head injuries. Conway was taken to hospital for tests, which confirmed the concussion, and his absence from the opening match was announced on Wednesday. Both players remain under observation, with updates on their participation in the remaining matches of the series to follow.
Context
Team lineup adjustments and injury management are common challenges during multi-format international cricket tours. Pre-match press conferences provide captains an opportunity to outline tactical approaches and squad readiness before a series begins.
