A forty-year-old fisherman died at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital after falling ill from eating fish in Varkala. The victim is Sudheer from Gralikunnu Thaickavil House in Chilakkur, and authorities suspect food poisoning as the cause. Sudheer and his family had bought the fish from another boat. On October 28, he fell sick and was first taken to the Varkala Taluk Hospital, then shifted to the Parippally Medical College Hospital, and later moved to the intensive care unit at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital as his condition worsened. Other family members also suffered from allergies and health issues, but their conditions were not severe. The panchayat health department stated that family members who ate the fish eggs and other parts faced health problems, and fish samples were sent to the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology in Kochi for testing. According to Thejas News, a bumper catch of Vatta fish occurred around Perumathura and Muthalappozhi starting October 26, and experts note that poor storage temperature can quickly cause histamine poisoning in sea fish like Vatta, while old fish might have also been mixed into sales.

Context

Food safety incidents involving improperly stored fish highlight the risks of bacterial growth and toxin buildup during sudden fish swarms. Local authorities and research institutes regularly test food samples to identify such contamination sources and prevent similar health emergencies.
