Actress and filmmaker Renu Desai recently spoke about the heavy public scrutiny she faces as a single mother raising two children, Akira and Aadya, from her former marriage to actor and Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan. In an interview with Visual Talks, Desai shared that her parenting choices are constantly judged by the public while her efforts go unappreciated.

Parenting Challenges

Desai explained that society in India tends to put all the blame on the mother if children from prominent families make mistakes. She stated that even though her children are well-behaved today, no one acknowledges that effort. She noted that she has tried since they were young to teach them proper values, honesty, and good behavior to the best of her ability.

Background and Career

Desai and Pawan Kalyan met on the sets of the Telugu hit film Badri, directed by Puri Jagannadh, where she played the role of Vennela. They later worked together on the film Johnny, which Pawan Kalyan wrote and directed. Desai played the character Geethanjali and also worked as the film's production designer and stylist. She revealed that she took the role in Johnny just one week before filming started after auditioning forty to forty-five other actresses without finding a match. After that film, she stopped acting to work as his personal stylist and costume coordinator. The two married in January 2009 in an Arya Samaj ceremony at his home, but they filed for divorce in 2011, and it was finalized in 2012.

Context
