Andhra Pradesh Holds Local Body Polls Amid Cyclone Murasu Rains
Reported by Kavya Rao (Senior Writer) · The Hindu - National ·
Andhra Pradesh is voting for local body seats on Thursday as heavy rains and winds from Cyclone Murasu affect parts of the state. State Election Commissioner Anil Chandra Punetha reviewed poll preparations on Wednesday with district collectors and police chiefs. Officials reported that rain had slowed down in most places, allowing voting to go ahead safely in nearly all areas. District teams have been told to watch local weather closely and make quick decisions if rain causes any trouble at specific polling stations.
Election Numbers And Security
Around 2.61 crore voters are eligible to cast their ballots across 31,460 polling stations. Elections are taking place for 7,770 out of 9,821 MPTC seats, while 2,051 seats were decided without a contest. A total of 18,843 candidates are in the fray for the contested seats. State Election Secretary A. Mallikarjuna stated that 2.52 lakh employees are handling poll duties, and another 52,000 workers will manage the vote counting. West Godavari, Guntur, and Bapatla districts received special focus because they faced the worst of the cyclone. Director General of Police Harish Kumar Gupta said police have set up security plans to manage crowds and queues at polling booths. Officials also arranged for videography at stations to record any problems while keeping votes secret, and directed presiding officers to use designated phone apps for updates. Panchayat Raj Commissioner Mailavarapu Krishna Teja shared the seat breakdown as voting got underway.
Context
MPTC and ZPTC polls are grassroot-level rural elections in Andhra Pradesh that help choose local body leaders who manage village and district development work. Local administration bodies frequently have to reschedule or adapt voting plans when heavy monsoon rains or cyclones hit coastal regions of the state.
