Market Rally

India's stock markets extended their winning streak to five consecutive sessions on Wednesday, even though a key measure of market fear remains high. The volatility index, known as the VIX, stays around 15 points. The fear gauge measures expected market volatility over the next 30 days. It has eased from a late-October high of 17 points but stays elevated due to growing global uncertainties.

Index Movements

On Wednesday, the Sensex gained 383 points, or 0.5 percent, to close at 77,301. The Nifty 50 advanced 149 points, or 0.6 percent, to settle at 23,960. These gains marked a fifth straight session of recovery. However, weakness in information technology stocks partly restrained the rise. The Nifty IT index declined 1.5 percent to 32,061 after falling as much as 3 percent during the session.

Investor Anxieties

While the Nifty 50 has declined nearly 8 percent since the beginning of 2026, the VIX has surged 65.4 percent year-to-date. This sharp rise reflects deep investor anxiety despite the recent recovery in equities. Experts point to multiple worries. V. K. Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Financial Services, said that a crude crisis, the flaring up of the West Asia conflict, U.S. results, and Trump's response all add to global investor worries. Siddhartha Khemka, head of research, wealth management at Motilal Oswal Financial Services, noted that investor focus will shift to the U.S. administration's next course of action on West Asia after the U.S. midterm elections. Brent crude prices traded at $104 on Wednesday, up 0.7 percent, after retreating from a six-month high of $118 a barrel touched last Friday.

Supporting Factors

Strong corporate earnings for the September quarter provided domestic equities with some support. Analysts also point to a possible shift in global capital flows toward India as concerns over stretched valuations in artificial intelligence-linked stocks trigger a reassessment of investment allocations. The AI-led rally over the past two years had attracted foreign capital to markets like South Korea, Taiwan, and the U.S., diverting flows away from India. Ajit Mishra, senior vice-president of research at Religare Broking, stated that crude needs to stay at current levels or below $100 a barrel for markets to recover completely, while a reversal in AI deceleration could also risk reversing recent gains.

Context

The volatility index, or VIX, is widely watched by traders to gauge market nervousness and potential price swings. Major geopolitical conflicts and swings in key commodity prices like crude oil frequently disrupt global financial stability and influence domestic investment trends.
