Technology giant Microsoft reports that its profits for the three months ending in September jumped to more than $36.6 billion, just days after announcing plans to offer voluntary buyout deals to a large portion of its global workforce. On Monday, the Windows developer stated it would offer these packages to around 60,000 workers to cut costs while pouring billions of dollars into artificial intelligence.
Financial Growth
Microsoft's quarterly revenue rose to $92.3 billion, which is up 19% from a year earlier. This growth was driven by strong performance in its cloud computing business, as revenue for Microsoft Cloud increased by 30%. Following the announcement, Microsoft shares rose by almost 2.9% in after-hours trading in New York on Wednesday.
Workforce Reductions
The company is extending voluntary redundancy offers to eligible employees in Canada, India, the UK, and the US to adapt its workforce to changing needs. Microsoft employs more than 220,000 people globally and stated the move creates greater flexibility while offering workers financial support and career planning resources. Meanwhile, competitor Alphabet reported a 25% drop in quarterly net profit and saw its shares fall by 9.75% after disappointing investors.
Context
Major technology companies are currently pouring massive sums into artificial intelligence chips and data centers to capture market share in a rapidly evolving sector. This heavy spending has drawn intense scrutiny from investors who are closely watching whether such massive investments will deliver sustainable long-term returns.
