Actor Kareena Kapoor recently rejected the nepo baby label during her appearance on Koffee With Karan alongside her husband Saif Ali Khan. When Saif joked that his win proved the chat show was not biased, Karan Johar pointed at Kareena as a nepo baby. Kareena responded by calling herself the poster girl for the purest talent of nepotism and organic talent, adding that she has never used her parents' names.

Career Journey

Kareena made her Bollywood debut in Refugee on June 30, 2000, and has since played a wide variety of roles across different genres over the past quarter of a century. She belongs to the famous Kapoor family, as the granddaughter of Raj Kapoor and the daughter of Randhir Kapoor and Babita. Speaking about the nepotism debate in 2020, she noted that 21 years of work would not have happened through lineage alone. She acknowledged her own struggle, though she admitted it is not as dramatic as arriving in a city with just ten rupees.

Hard Work and Audience Choice

Kareena stated that actors from film families work just as hard as outsiders. She pointed out that audiences choose the biggest stars, noting successful outsiders like Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan, Ayushmann Khurrana, and Rajkummar Rao, alongside stars like Alia Bhatt and herself. She was last seen in Daayra, directed by Meghna Gulzar, which underperformed at the box office.

Context

The debate around nepotism in Bollywood often centers on the advantages and access enjoyed by children of film industry veterans versus actors who start without family connections. While family lineage can help secure an initial debut or industry entry, long-term success in the film industry ultimately depends on audience acceptance, box office performance, and continuous hard work over time.
