Private sector firms are gaining traction alongside large public sector undertakings in India's growing defence industry, driven by the national push for local manufacturing. Market analysts are closely tracking five mid-sized defence stocks for their long-term potential.

Stock Performance

MTAR Technologies features a diversified engineering order book, though 67 percent of its orders come from clean energy rather than defence backlogs. Vinit Bolinjkar from Ventura points out that growth depends on timely execution and planned capacity increases. Meanwhile, Zen Technologies reported a consolidated order book of 1,375.7 crore rupees at the end of September 2026, supported by strong revenue growth and margin recovery in the second quarter. Astra Microwave holds multi-year programme visibility with shares closing at 1,578.60 rupees, and Data Patterns shows a promising outlook for the 2027 financial year despite some pending order confirmations. Apollo Micro Systems shares rallied nearly 8.58 percent to close at 434.80 rupees on the Bombay Stock Exchange.

Market Outlook

Soumitra Sengupta from Lamron Analysts notes that Apollo Micro Systems and MTAR Technologies stand to benefit the most from government policies like Make in India, Atmanirbhar Bharat, import bans, and higher domestic spending. While state-owned public sector firms trade at moderate valuation multiples, these specialised private companies offer faster earnings growth and higher export potential over time.

Context

India has steadily increased its focus on domestic defence manufacturing to reduce reliance on foreign military imports. Government policies now mandate local sourcing for various military equipment, creating new growth opportunities for private engineering and technology firms.
