India Wins Big Green Energy Funds as Solar Plans Move Forward
Reported by Aakash Bora (Staff Writer) · The Hindu - Business ·
India has locked in early investment promises worth $400 billion for its renewable energy sector. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi shared the update on Wednesday. The funds will cover green hydrogen, energy storage, and transmission lines.
Investor Talks
Global investors and fund managers made these offers during a CEO roundtable meeting. The discussions took place on the sidelines of the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo in New Delhi. Mr. Joshi noted that these numbers are still preliminary while final details are sorted out. Overseas players feel very secure about putting their money in the country. He specifically highlighted a meeting with the Canadian Investment Fund, which called India the safest place for investments.
ALMM Review
Meanwhile, the government will consult industry groups over the next 10 to 15 days on the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers framework. This rule requires certain projects to use locally approved solar module makers. The system was last extended in July and runs until December 31 for solar PV cells. India's solar cell manufacturing capacity currently sits at 41 GW. Makers have also promised to add another 70 GW by the end of the year. Officials plan to hear all sides before making a final call since industry opinions are split.
Context
India aims to massively expand its clean energy output to meet climate goals and reduce fossil fuel use. Clear policy frameworks and huge financial backing help attract global capital to domestic manufacturing and infrastructure projects.
