Representative image · PexelsSocial media terms like 'ferritin face' and 'iron-deficiency face' are not recognised medical diagnoses, according to healthcare professionals. Ferritin is a protein that stores iron, and its levels help assess the body's iron stores before iron-deficiency anaemia develops, but it does not produce a distinct facial appearance.
Medical Insights
Skin, hair and nails require adequate protein, energy, vitamins and minerals to function normally. Iron deficiency can cause pallor of the skin and mucous membranes, spoon-shaped nails and diffuse hair shedding. Low haemoglobin causes pallor in the skin, lips, gums or inner eyelids, but dullness and dark circles are not specific to low iron. Other deficiencies also cause visible signs. Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to hyperpigmentation over the knuckles and changes in the tongue. Zinc deficiency affects skin integrity and hair growth, while vitamin C results in bleeding gums and poor wound healing. Dry or scaly skin can stem from low vitamin A, essential fatty acids or zinc. Cracks at the corners of the mouth and a smooth, sore tongue can also indicate various nutrient shortages.
Expert Warnings
Ramya Subburaj, senior clinical dietitian and head of the department of dietetics at Apollo Speciality Hospitals in Vanagaram, Chennai, stated that these signs should be viewed as clues rather than proof, noting a major overlap between nutritional and non-nutritional causes. Pushpa Gnanaraj, senior consultant in dermatology at Apollo Speciality Hospitals, added that facial changes are not specific to low iron. Vinitha Krishnan, chief clinical dietitian at SIMS Hospital in Chennai, noted that changes are subtle and similar features can occur due to stress, lack of sleep, dehydration, allergies, ageing, or thyroid disorders. Reshma Aleem, senior clinical dietician at Rela Hospital in Chennai, explained that recovery speed depends on the severity of the deficiency. Doctors warn against taking supplements based on social media checklists, as excess intake can harm health and delay the diagnosis of the actual cause.
Context
Nutritional deficiencies are common health concerns that often present with physical symptoms, leading people to seek quick explanations online. Medical professionals regularly emphasise proper clinical testing, such as complete blood counts and ferritin studies, over internet trends to ensure accurate diagnosis and treatment.
