Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Jio Platforms plans to launch its initial public offering on October 21 to raise about $3.8 billion. If completed, this will become India's biggest share listing to date. The shares are expected to list on October 28.
Use of Funds and Backers
The company plans to use most of the money raised to pay back debt owed by its telecoms division. Jio Platforms counts Meta and Google as major foreign investors and also runs artificial intelligence, cloud, and enterprise network businesses.
Market Context
This large offering comes as India sees a big rush of companies coming to the market. Nearly 250 companies are in the pipeline to raise a combined 4.65 trillion rupees, which is about $48 billion, through IPOs according to PRIME Database. This list includes the India business of Danish brewer Carlsberg and hotel aggregator Oyo's parent company Prism. The current record for India's biggest listing is held by Hyundai Motor India, which raised $2.9 billion in 2024, while the National Stock Exchange of India made its market debut last month after a $2.3 billion IPO.
Context
An initial public offering lets a privately held company sell shares to the public for the first time to raise money for growth and other needs. Large share sales of this scale often draw strong interest from both local and foreign investors in growing economies like India.
