Dhanteras will be celebrated on November 6, 2026, marking a major festival for buying gold, silver, and new metal items to bring good luck and prosperity home. Also known as Dhantrayodashi, the festival falls on the Trayodashi Tithi of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik. According to local time in Kolkata, the Trayodashi Tithi starts at 10:31 am on November 6 and ends at 10:48 am on the next day, November 7. This ensures the Tithi remains active during the evening of November 6. Based on local panjika calculations, shoppers have three favorable time windows for making purchases on that day. The morning auspicious time runs from 11:20 am to 12:44 pm. The afternoon slot is open from 3:32 pm to 4:56 pm. A night time window is also available from 8:08 pm to 9:44 pm.

Worship Times

Aside from shopping, the festival involves the worship of Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Kuber. In Kolkata, the auspicious time for the Lakshmi-Kuber puja is set from 5:28 pm to 7:26 pm on November 6, lasting for nearly one hour and fifty-eight minutes. The Pradosh Kaal will run from 4:56 pm to 7:30 pm on the same evening, which is considered an ideal period for invoking Goddess Lakshmi. People also worship Lord Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda and medicine, alongside Lord Kuber and Goddess Lakshmi to pray for good health, long life, and financial well-being. Households also light a Yamadip outside their homes to pray for the safety and well-being of family members.

Shopping Guidelines

Traditional items bought on this day include gold and silver jewelry, coins, brass and copper utensils, kitchen tools, and idols of Lakshmi and Ganesha. Buyers are advised to check their personal financial capacity and verify item purity, hallmarking, weight, making charges, and GST before making a purchase. Because timings can vary depending on different panjikas and calculation methods, buyers should double-check schedules with their local panjika or a local priest.

Context

Festivals like Dhanteras form an important part of the cultural and retail calendar across India, traditionally driving high consumer demand for precious metals. Local almanacs and panjikas play a central role in determining exact auspicious hours for Hindu rituals based on lunar calendar positions. Such traditions blend cultural beliefs with seasonal family preparations ahead of the Diwali festivities.
