Rankings Drop
For the second year in a row, no Indian university made it into the top 50 of the QS World University Rankings for Asia 2027. IIT Delhi stands as the highest-ranked institution in the country at 66th place, falling from 59th last year. The report, released on Wednesday by higher education experts QS Quacquarelli Symonds, shows that all six of India's top institutions have dropped. IISc Bengaluru fell to 79th, IIT Bombay dropped to 83rd, IIT Madras moved to 85th, IIT Kharagpur slid to 90th, and IIT Kanpur dropped to 97th. Meanwhile, Delhi University fell out of the top 100 to land at 106th. Other institutions such as Chandigarh University, Lovely Professional University, and Jamia Millia Islamia managed to improve their standing.
Growth and Research
Even with the decline of top institutes, India's overall presence in the list grew to 325 universities, up from 294 previously, making it the second most represented system in the region after mainland China. Since 2016, ranked Indian institutions have grown more than thirteenfold. QS Senior Vice-President Ben Sowter noted that India has built remarkable research capacity. The country leads Asia in research output per faculty member and doctoral staff qualifications. However, this strong volume has not matched its research impact or citation scores, with weak performance on academic reputation and internationalisation indicators also weighing down the scores.
Context
University ranking systems evaluate institutions across multiple criteria including teaching quality, employer reputation, and research citations, meaning high staff output does not automatically guarantee a high final rank if other peer universities grow faster or score better on international impact. Such lists help students and policymakers compare institutions across borders, though individual universities often emphasize different local strengths beyond these specific metrics.
