UPDATE - follow-up to Malkajgiri Police arrest seven in illegal loan racket; gang collected hefty interest in advance, blank signed cheques: Seven people face arrest for running an illegal lending network that cheated borrowers by promising large loans, collecting high advance interest, and using blank signed cheques and promissory notes to force extra payments. The arrests were carried out by the Special Operations Team of the L.B. Nagar Zone.
Details of Arrests
Those arrested include 48-year-old Kumbam Nagamma, 45-year-old Kandela Gangamma, 36-year-old Kandela Mangamma alias Rani, and 32-year-old Adulla Anusha. Three other suspects named Kandela Shiva Kumar alias Varun, Vagrigiri Indramma alias Y.V. Indra, and Gaikwada Swapna were arrested earlier on October 26, while four more people remain absconding. Police have identified seven primary victims and are looking into 20 other potential victims within the Malkajgiri Police Commissionerate limits, with cases filed across L.B. Nagar, Neredmet, and Keesara police stations.
Modus Operandi
According to Malkajgiri Police Commissioner B. Sumathi, the gang targeted senior citizens, employees, businesspersons, and people facing financial trouble by reaching out through known intermediaries. They promised large loans but only gave a small part of the money while keeping heavy advance interest, later demanding extra cash under the guise of arranging bigger loans. The gang took blank signed cheques, bonds, and promissory notes for amounts much higher than the actual loans given. When victims tried to get their documents back or questioned the payments, the gang threatened them with physical harm and criminal cases.
Specific Victims and Seizures
One victim was an elderly woman doctor trying to buy an AI-based cancer-detection machine, from whom the gang took money, documents, a Skoda car, and a Toyota Innova Hycross. Other victims included a private teacher, a driver, a driver's friend, and a retired Veterinary Department employee. During the operation, police recovered the two cars, nine mobile phones, three additional smartphones, 25 promissory notes, 22 blank cheques, two Telangana pattadar passbooks, and two sale deeds, alongside cash of ₹33,010 from Nagamma and ₹14,680 from Gangamma.
Context
Illegal lending networks typically trap vulnerable individuals by exploiting their urgent financial needs through predatory interest rates and coercive debt collection methods. Law enforcement agencies often track such unauthorized financial operations to protect citizens from severe economic exploitation and systematic harassment.
