The Controversy
Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan recently made a statement at a public function advising people to avoid unnecessary angioplasty procedures. His remark has triggered a major debate among medical professionals across the state, with many doctors strongly objecting to what they called a generalized statement.
Medical Reactions
Rajesh Gopalan Nair, who is a professor and head of cardiology at the Government Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode, broke ranks to support the Chief Minister in a social media post. He stated that unnecessary medical procedures have indeed become common practice. While his post drew sharp criticism from several fellow doctors, it also received numerous comments from members of the public sharing bad hospital experiences. Despite the backlash, Dr. Rajesh stood by his views.
Council's Stance
The Interventional Cardiology Council of Kerala, led by president Rajesh T., released a statement addressing the issue. The council stated that it supports ethical, evidence-based medical practice where every treatment has a clear clinical need. However, the group cautioned that public fear over unneeded procedures must not delay life-saving treatment during a medical emergency. According to data from the council's registry presented at their last annual conference, more than 70 percent of angioplasties done in Kerala involve acute and emergency situations.
Context
Angioplasty is a common medical procedure used to open blocked heart arteries and restore blood flow. While planned procedures for stable patients allow time for second opinions and detailed evaluations, emergency procedures during a sudden heart attack are strictly time-sensitive and cannot be delayed.
