BMW has expanded its 450 bike lineup with the new F 450 R sport-naked motorcycle, which is set to replace the older G310R. The new bike shares its platform with the F 450 GS adventure tourer launched earlier in April. It enters a crowded performance segment dominated by three key rivals: the third-generation KTM 390 Duke R, the Kawasaki Ninja 500, and the updated Aprilia Tuono 457 Special Edition.

Performance And Build

Despite having the second smallest engine of the group at 420cc, the BMW model leads in peak power output with 48 horsepower at 8,750 rpm, while the Aprilia edges it out slightly in torque with 43.5 Nm. The KTM 390 Duke R relies on a smaller 398.63cc single-cylinder motor, yet matches the twins in power-to-weight ratios and provides the lightest kerb weight of 168.3 kilograms alongside the highest ground clearance at 183mm. Meanwhile, the Kawasaki Ninja 500 serves as the most accessible choice with a low seat height of 785mm, though it carries the highest ex-showroom price tag of Rs 5.76 lakh.

Features And Pricing

BMW offers the F 450 R across multiple variants with standard features like traction control, ride modes, and heated grips, while higher trims add a quickshifter and an Easy Ride Clutch system. Prices for the BMW remain unannounced, whereas the KTM 390 Duke R stands as the most affordable option at Rs 3.45 lakh, and the Aprilia Tuono 457 Special Edition is priced at Rs 4 lakh.

Context

Performance motorcycle manufacturers frequently introduce competing models in the sub-500cc category to capture young buyers looking for a balance of daily usability and sport riding. Comparing technical specifications, pricing, and hardware across brands helps riders choose between raw power, features, and comfort.
