Protest Plans

The Cockroach Janta Party has announced plans to hold a protest march to Jantar Mantar in Delhi on October 10 to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. CJP co-convener Ashutosh Ranka stated that the group will proceed with the demonstration even if authorities deny official permission, adding that wherever police stop them will become their protest site until they are allowed entry or arrested.

Potential Crackdown

Ranka claimed that intelligence sources, Delhi Police contacts, and senior journalists have warned him, founder Abhijeet Dipke, and Saurav Das that they could face arrest before the protest takes place. Addressing the possibility of police action, Ranka warned that any baton charge by authorities would shift their target directly to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, whom the group holds responsible for controlling the Delhi Police.

Wider Grievances

The group accuses the Election Commission of compromising elections and lacking independence, prompting them to launch civil disobedience. This upcoming event follows the CJP's month-long sit-in at Jantar Mantar in July, which demanded the resignation of then-Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET paper leak. Nationwide protests against Kumar have grown due to alleged issues in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, alongside an Indian Express report revealing that two other election commissioners objected 10 months to steps taken by Kumar.

Context

Public demonstrations and sit-ins at Jantar Mantar represent a long-standing method for political groups and civil society organizations in Delhi to press authorities for policy changes or leadership resignations. The Election Commission of India functions as the constitutional body responsible for conducting free and fair polls across the country. Such high-profile confrontations between political activists and law enforcement frequently highlight growing tensions over electoral integrity and administrative accountability.
