HealthHeart and brain health share the same risk factors, says cardiologist

Heart health and brain function are closely linked, with the same risk factors influencing both organs, according to cardiologist Dr. Debdatta Majumdar. The doctor, a senior interventional cardiology consultant at Narayana RN Tagore Hospital in Kolkata, explained that the heart’s job of circulating blood delivers oxygen and nutrients essential for brain activity. When the cardiovascular system is weakened, the brain can suffer. She highlighted three key health measures that affect both: blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Elevated pressure can harm tiny vessels that feed the brain, leading to problems with memory, attention, processing speed and decision‑making. High cholesterol promotes atherosclerosis, where fatty plaques narrow arteries and may block blood flow to the brain, raising stroke risk. Persistent high blood‑sugar also damages vessels and is linked to heart disease and strokes. Majumdar urged regular monitoring of these three numbers because they often rise without clear symptoms. To protect both organs, she recommended consistent exercise, a nutritious diet, maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding tobacco, limiting alcohol, getting enough sleep and managing stress. Periodic health check‑ups can spot issues early. In her final note, she said caring for the heart automatically supports the vessels that keep the brain running smoothly. ## Context The link between vascular health and cognitive function is well established; controlling blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol is a proven strategy to lower the chances of dementia and stroke.
