A new electric vehicle has broken past the 500 km/h top speed mark for production cars. The BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme reached a top speed of 503.17 km/h in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Performance and Specs

This vehicle belongs to a category called the Megacar and delivers a peak power of 2,977 bhp. Four motors drive the car and can touch 30,000 RPM. The car uses an 80 kWh battery pack with a 30C discharge rate. Its 1200V e4 platform supports a power-to-weight ratio of 1,200 bhp per tonne. A torque vectoring system adjusts settings 100 times every second. Production is limited to 30 units across the world.

Track History

Last September, the car reached 496.22 km/h in Germany. It also finished a lap at the Nurburgring Nordschleife in 6 minutes and 59.157 seconds. The new record in Abu Dhabi beat its previous top speed by 6.95 km/h and earned a Guinness World Record. The earlier base version of the Yangwang U9 featured the DiSus-X body control system that could perform rhythmic movements and jump to avoid potholes.

Context

Electric vehicles continue to set new speed and performance milestones that challenge traditional fuel-powered supercars. Extreme engineering in aerodynamics and battery technology helps these heavy electric cars handle high speeds safely.
