Reported by Varun Krishnan (Senior Writer) · The Hindu - National ·

Shivamogga Superintendent of Police B. Nikhil urged students to construct an unbreakable fort of knowledge through books and grow into law-abiding citizens during an address on Friday.
Science Fest and Daily Reading
Mr. Nikhil spoke at the inauguration of The Hindu In School Science Fest, named Avishkar and Ramanujan Spark Quest, which was organised alongside Excellent Moodubidire in Shivamogga. He credited his own success to reading newspapers daily since his school days and praised the publication for covering local, state, national, world, business, sports, and opinion news with nearly 150 years of trusted credibility.
English and Public Safety
The police officer advised students from smaller cities to practice speaking English without fearing mistakes, noting that good communication skills are vital for job interviews. Turning to public safety, he told students to use their own judgment, avoid blindly following anyone, refuse illegal substances by saying no in local terms, and always respect the law. He also shared traffic safety data showing that out of 358 recorded deaths, 150 involved two-wheeler riders who might have lived by wearing helmets, and asked students to make sure their families wear them.
Context
Police officers and public officials frequently address youth gatherings at schools and colleges to guide them on civic duties, road safety, and personal choices. These outreach sessions aim to steer young people away from common social risks like substance abuse and traffic negligence while encouraging academic and professional preparation.
