Kerala police cut opposition leader security and revise VIP protection levels
Reported by Tanvi Pillai (Section Editor) · The Hindu - National ·
Kerala Police have downgraded Leader of the Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan's personal security from Z+ to Y category. A security review coordination committee made this decision after reassessing threat levels for various politicians and judicial officers. Mr. Vijayan will now travel with a pilot vehicle instead of a full convoy and will have two personal security guards. Officials sent the revised security lists to Inspector Generals, Deputy Inspectors Generals, and District Police Chiefs a few days ago.
Security Changes
The Governor and the Chief Minister now hold the highest Z+ security category. State Ministers, the Speaker, and the Deputy Speaker receive Y category security with an escort. Former Chief Minister A.K. Antony is assigned Z category security. Union Home Minister of State for Petroleum and Tourism Suresh Gopi, CPI(M) general secretary M.A. Baby, and CPI(M) leader P. Jayarajan receive Y category security. CPI(M) State secretary M.V. Govindan is placed in the X category. Meanwhile, Hindu Aikya Vedi leader Valsan Thillankeri now has only one personal security guard instead of two, and BJP State general secretary M.T. Ramesh has lost his police protection entirely.
Context
Police forces regularly review security details for political figures based on changing threat assessments and official intelligence reports. These adjustments determine the exact number of guards, escort vehicles, and pilot cars assigned to individuals depending on their current public roles and perceived security needs.
