An oil tanker carrying an all-Indian crew was struck by naval drones off Russia's Black Sea coast near Sochi on Tuesday evening, causing an open fire and a heavy cloud of black smoke. Russia's transport ministry confirmed that the Liberian-flagged vessel was hit, leading to a blaze so intense that firefighters could not tackle it at first. All 23 Indian nationals on board were rescued safely with no injuries. Sochi has a population close to 500,000, and authorities temporarily closed local beaches in nearby Sirius as a precaution while monitoring showed pollutant levels below permitted limits.
Emergency Response
Russian Transport Minister Andrey Nikitin set up an emergency response headquarters, deploying enough personnel and equipment to handle the incident.
Bulgaria Incidents
In a separate incident in Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone, two other commercial vessels were struck by drones on Tuesday. Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev stated that the Togo-flagged Alfa Watan sank after suffering heavy structural damage, with no immediate word on its crew. The Palau-flagged Able caught fire in the strike, and a Bulgarian ferry rescued 18 crew members while two injured sailors were flown to a hospital in Varna. Bulgarian PM Rumen Radev called the strikes a blatant violation of international law. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy blamed Russia for the Bulgarian zone strikes, stating that Ukraine conducted no operations there and that a combined Russian attack used maritime and aerial drones.
Context
The Black Sea is a crucial international shipping route for grain, oil, and other goods connecting Eastern Europe and Asia, making commercial vessels increasingly vulnerable amid ongoing regional conflicts. Maritime security laws strictly protect civilian shipping lanes, and attacks on neutral flagged vessels draw heavy international condemnation.
