UPDATE - follow-up to Ukraine drone attack sparks fire on Liberian-flagged oil tanker carrying Indian crew: A Liberian-flagged oil tanker with 23 Indian crew members caught fire after a naval drone strike off Russia's Black Sea coast near Sochi on Tuesday evening.
Emergency Response
Russian Transport Minister Andrey Nikitin set up an emergency response center to handle the blaze. Officials closed nearby beaches in Sirius as a safety step. Tests later showed pollution levels in Sochi stayed below danger limits.
Bulgarian Incidents
Separately, two commercial ships were hit by drones in Bulgarian waters on Tuesday. The Togo-flagged Alfa Watan sank from heavy damage, while a Bulgarian ferry rescued 18 crew members from the burning Palau-flagged Able, flying two injured sailors to Varna.
Reactions
Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev called the strikes an illegal violation of maritime law. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy blamed Russia for the attacks, stating Ukraine's military took no action near those vessels.
Context
Maritime traffic in the Black Sea has faced rising security risks due to the ongoing conflict in the region, affecting commercial shipping routes used by multiple countries. Coastal nations continue to monitor environmental and safety conditions closely following such incidents.
