Delhi Police have filed a first information report against senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra following a complaint about an unauthorized entry into Akashvani Bhavan. The case stems from a Tuesday protest march led by opposition politicians who were demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over accusations of vote tampering.

The Protest March

Around 200 to 300 opposition lawmakers marched from Parliament toward Nirvachan Sadan to press for the election chief's departure. Police blocked the procession on Parliament Street after about 700 metres using heavy barricades. Rahul Gandhi climbed over these barriers, and after security personnel shut the main gates of the All India Radio complex, he walked through an open side gate into the Akashvani Bhavan compound.

Inside Akashvani Bhavan

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with other prominent politicians including KC Venugopal and Deepender Hooda, followed him inside the building while demanding a meeting with the Election Commissioner. The leaders staged a sit-in protest on the premises for roughly seven hours. Police officers eventually entered the building to persuade them to leave, before detaining the protesters around 7 pm and taking them to Kingsway Camp in a bus, where they were released later that night.

Context

Akashvani Bhavan houses public broadcaster facilities in Central Delhi and sits right next to the Election Commission headquarters, making it a frequent focal point during political demonstrations in the capital. Protests near high-security government zones often trigger swift police responses and legal actions regarding unauthorized access. Bharatiya Janata Party representatives rejected the opposition claims against the election chief and condemned the demonstration.
