UPDATE - follow-up to Rahul-Priyanka surprise stole show at INDIA march. Why allies are not amused: Opposition allies are expressing strong displeasure after Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra captured the spotlight during a joint protest march in Delhi on Tuesday. About 200 Opposition MPs had gathered at Parliament's Makar Dwar to march toward the Election Commission office to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over voter roll issues.
The Akashvani Sit-In
While police detained senior Opposition leaders like Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and took them away, Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi entered Akashvani Bhavan to stage a sit-in. Congress sources stated that the move was impromptu and unplanned. KC Venugopal, the Congress general secretary for organisation, later expressed regret to alliance partners over the resulting mistrust because allies were not informed in advance.
Ally Reactions
INDIA bloc sources complained that a joint opposition demonstration turned into a single-party show. A Left MP also questioned the logic of seeking a meeting with the poll panel when the march's stated goal was demanding the Chief Election Commissioner's resignation. In response to the friction, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge is hosting a lunch for INDIA bloc MPs at Sagar Ratna restaurant in Janpath to mend ties.
Context
Political alliances often experience friction during joint protests when major parties take unilateral actions without consulting smaller partners. This incident highlights the ongoing coordination challenges within large opposition coalitions in India.
