The Attack
Ukraine used naval drones to strike an oil tanker off the southern Russian coast near the resort city of Sochi on Tuesday, October 6, 2026. The attack caused crude oil to burn openly in the Black Sea and sent a thick column of black smoke into the sky over Sochi, which has a population close to 500,000. Russia's transport ministry confirmed the vessel was a Liberian-flagged tanker.
Rescue and Response
The blaze was so intense that firefighters could not tackle it initially. However, all 23 crew members on board the tanker, who were Indian citizens, were rescued safely following the incident. Russian Transport Minister Andrey Nikitin set up an emergency response headquarters, and authorities temporarily closed beaches in nearby Sirius as a precaution while monitoring air and water quality.
Context
The Black Sea has become a major zone of conflict since the Russia-Ukraine war began in 2022, with commercial shipping frequently caught in the crossfire. Both sides have stepped up attacks on maritime trade and energy infrastructure, threatening vital supply routes and regional safety.
