Kenya confirmed its first-ever Ebola death after a citizen who lived in the Democratic Republic of Congo for seven years returned to Nairobi. Health Minister Aden Duale stated that the man fell ill roughly a month ago and received medical care in Congo before traveling by road to the Ugandan capital of Kampala. He then caught a flight to Nairobi on October 3. Upon landing, a relative and a friend transported him to Nairobi Hospital. Medical staff isolated him immediately as he showed severe symptoms including fever, chills, fatigue, weakness, muscle pain, painful swallowing, sore throat, and bleeding under the skin. He tested positive for the virus and died late Monday night around 11:30 PM. Officials arranged a safe and dignified burial for later in the day. Authorities have traced 28 close contacts, which include family members and medical staff, and confirmed one positive test. Teams are also tracking 23 passengers and four crew members from his flight, while quarantine arrangements are ready for anyone at risk. Minister Duale urged the public to remain calm and stated that officials have put all systems in place to stop the virus from spreading.

Context

This case stems from an ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is dealing with its seventeenth flare-up of the disease using the Bundibugyo strain. International health agencies often face major hurdles managing outbreaks in the region due to armed conflict, local mistrust, and reduced foreign aid funding. Neighboring nations routinely step up screening at border crossings and airports whenever the virus spreads beyond Congo's borders.
