UPDATE - follow-up to Kenya confirms first Ebola case after traveler from Congo dies in Nairobi: Kenya has confirmed its first-ever case and death from Ebola, involving a citizen who lived in Congo for seven years before returning to Nairobi.
The Journey and Treatment
The man fell ill about a month ago and received treatment at various hospitals in Congo before traveling by road to Kampala, Uganda. He then boarded a flight to Nairobi, arriving on Saturday afternoon. Relatives took him in a private vehicle to Nairobi Hospital, where health minister Aden Duale said he was isolated and tested positive for the virus before dying late Monday. He was buried on Tuesday afternoon following public safety rules.
Contact Tracing and Response
Health authorities have placed border points on high alert. Officials have identified 28 contacts, including family members and health workers, while another 23 passengers and four crew members from the flight are being traced. All contacts will remain in isolation for 21 days. The World Health Organization has delivered about 1,000 Ebola tests and 1,000 personal protective equipment kits to high-risk counties in Kenya, while the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention dispatched a high-level support team.
Outbreak Background
The current outbreak began in mid-eastern Congo in mid-May and has recorded at least 8,400 cases and more than 4,000 deaths, making it the fastest-growing outbreak in history. Kenya is the fourth nation to report a case during this outbreak, following Uganda with 20 cases and France with one. According to the Kenya Medical Research Institute, Kenya has never previously experienced an Ebola outbreak.
Context
Ebola spreads through contact with infected bodily fluids or contaminated surfaces, making rapid contact tracing and isolation crucial to preventing wider community transmission during cross-border travel.
