Fatty liver can shrink toward a normal size when caught early and the cause is tackled, says Dr Ameet Mandot, Director of Hepatology at Gleneagles Hospital Parel. Early‑stage disease may reverse as excess fat leaves the liver, especially after weight loss, healthier eating and regular exercise. The amount of reversal depends on how far the disease has progressed and whether inflammation or fibrosis is already present. Factors such as the quantity of fat, existing inflammation, fibrosis, body weight and metabolic health all shape recovery, the hepatologist notes. Diabetes, high cholesterol, insulin resistance, alcohol use and certain medicines can keep fat accumulating. Losing about 5 % of body weight can cut liver fat; larger losses bring added benefit, but changes should be gradual and sustainable. A balanced diet low in sugary drinks, refined carbs and processed foods, combined with aerobic and strength training, improves liver and metabolic health even without dramatic weight loss. Controlling diabetes, cholesterol and blood pressure, and discussing alcohol intake with a doctor, are also key. Improvements may start within weeks to months, though the timeline varies per individual. Liver size alone does not diagnose fatty liver; imaging and blood tests are used together. Persistent inflammation can lead to fibrosis and eventually cirrhosis, especially in obese or diabetic patients.

Context

Fatty liver disease is part of a broader group of metabolic disorders that rise with obesity and sedentary lifestyles, making early lifestyle intervention a common preventive strategy.
