The Indian rupee staged a strong recovery against the US dollar, reaching its highest intraday level in about six months at 93.89.
Market Movement
The currency opened lower at 94.50 against the dollar compared to its previous close of 94.41. It recovered steadily during the day to touch 93.89, marking a gain of 52 paise from the previous close and 61 paise from its starting level. This is the strongest intraday level for the rupee since May 7.
Pressure Points
Earlier in the session, rising crude oil prices and a stronger dollar created downward pressure on the currency. Brent crude futures rose 2.04 percent to trade at 100.30 dollars per barrel. Meanwhile, the dollar index gained 0.17 percent to reach 101.71.
Foreign Investment Support
Foreign institutional investors net purchased shares worth 14,974.68 crore rupees in the domestic stock market. Domestic equities also rallied sharply, with the Sensex jumping over 1,700 points to cross 81,000 and the Nifty climbing more than 400 points above 25,000.
Future Outlook
Analysts note that the rupee may maintain a positive trend due to strong domestic markets and continuous foreign fund inflows. However, geopolitical tensions, Middle East conditions, crude price fluctuations, and the dollar index remain key factors to watch.
Context
When foreign investors pump large amounts of money into local stocks, they buy shares using rupees, which increases the demand for the Indian currency in the market. At the same time, because India imports most of its oil needs, expensive crude oil forces companies to buy more dollars to pay for imports, which normally puts pressure on the rupee.
