Nayanthara's divine powers fail to rescue formulaic Mookuthi Amman 2

UPDATE - follow-up to 'Mookuthi Amman 2' movie review: Nayanthara's Amman has divine powers, but cannot defeat bad filmmaking: Director Sundar C turns the latest Deepavali release into a superhero-style spectacle, borrowing visual cues from Marvel and DC films like Avengers: Infinity War, Doctor Strange, and Thor. In the movie, Nayanthara plays Anandhi, a policewoman who experiences nightmares of a previous birth and discovers she is actually Amman. The film pairs Anandhi against a villain named Bhaira, played by Regena Cassandrra, alongside Bhaira's partner, Duniya Vijay.
Script Details
The plot follows a formulaic structure split into two halves. The first half focuses on Anandhi's search for answers behind her nightmares, while the second half features Yogi Babu's comedy, flashbacks, and a climactic showdown. The film also includes appearances by Nithin Sathya and features commentary from Instagram content creator Madhu, who noted that traditional Amman movies represent female rage that women cannot express in real life. However, Sundar C blends the devotee and deity into one character and nerfs the goddess by calling her a mere kaaval deivam, while giving the main backstory and emotional heft to Bhaira instead.
Context
This sequel attempts to revive the popular 'amman padam' sub-genre of South Indian cinema that flourished under filmmakers like Rama Narayanan, AP Nagarajan, and Kodi Ramakrishna before fading from Tamil screens for decades. Fantasy-comedy elements were previously brought back to this genre by RJ Balaji in the 2020 film Mookuthi Amman.
