Auqib Nabi earned a place in the squad for a five-match ODI series against New Zealand, marking a major milestone in a career that began in Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir. Growing up in a region where cricket activities remained suspended for nearly three decades, he often had to sneak out of his house away from his father to play the game.

Early Struggles

His early coach Muzaffar Mattu recalled that training sessions often faced interruptions from nearby firing and grenade attacks, forcing players to run for cover. In 2012, Zubair Dar noticed Auqib during a match in Gantamulla where the eighth-grader took four wickets and scored 55 runs. Since his father worked as a teacher and wanted him to become a doctor, Dar and his friends had to persuade the family to let him play for the Baramulla club.

Rising Through Ranks

Later, Auqib faced trouble during his first match on a turf pitch in Srinagar because he did not know about spike shoes and kept slipping until his coach lent him his pair. He missed out on under-16 cricket due to a lack of professional coaching until age 14, but later starred for the Jammu and Kashmir under-19 team by scoring over 60 runs against Punjab and 105 runs against Saurashtra in Rajkot. He then attended a special pace bowling camp run by Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath in Chennai, after once again convincing his family with the help of his coaches. He made his debut against the West Indies on September 30 of this year.

Context

Jammu and Kashmir has produced several talented cricketers in recent years despite severe infrastructure and security challenges in the past. Specialized training camps run by legends like Glenn McGrath help raw talents from remote regions refine their bowling actions and meet professional fitness standards.
