No Full Closure

The Bangalore Development Authority clarified that the Hebbal Flyover and Ballari Road corridor will not face a complete closure for 18 months during the construction of the new elevated corridor. Instead, traffic will move with limited lane restrictions and phased diversions managed by the Bengaluru Traffic Police.

Traffic Restrictions

Heavy vehicles will face bans between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m., while other drivers are simply advised to use different routes. School buses and public transport will still have access to the stretch. The construction work requires barricading a 4.5-metre-wide strip, which takes up one out of three existing lanes in each direction. The remaining two lanes and the service road will stay open.

Congestion Concerns

The blocked lane handles about 35% of the total traffic on this route, meaning the restrictions will likely add to existing peak-hour gridlocks. Authorities state that roughly 20% of vehicles must divert to other roads to prevent total blockages. Because the current alternate routes are in poor condition, police have asked the Greater Bengaluru Authority and the BDA to repair and asphalt roads like New BEL Road and R.T. Nagar Station Road, while also adding proper road signs and markings.

Context

This project is part of a larger push by city authorities to build integrated tunnels and elevated corridors to ease travel toward the Kempegowda International Airport. Major infrastructure works in busy urban areas often require careful balancing between civil progress and managing daily commuter traffic.
