Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav released a pair of cheetahs named Vyom and Neera in a protected forest area located within the Sagar district on Wednesday. This marks the third official home for these big cats in the state, following earlier setups in Sheopur and Mandsaur districts.
Official Events
The release coincided with the final day of Wildlife Conservation Week. During the gathering, the Chief Minister launched the Vulture Population Estimation 2026 report along with a book written in the Bundelkhandi language about the sanctuary.
Financial Support
State authorities collected close to 80 crore rupees from various wildlife zones this year. Out of that amount, 20 crore rupees went directly to people living in nearby villages. Officials are also helping locals set up homestays around the buffer zone by offering grants ranging from two to three lakh rupees.
Future Plans
Two more cheetahs will arrive at the Sagar facility next month. State leadership noted that overall cheetah numbers have climbed from eight to 60 across the country, while Madhya Pradesh also holds the highest tiger count nationwide.
Context
Protected wildlife zones in India often balance conservation goals with local community welfare through tourism and buffer zone development. Expanding species into multiple habitats helps reduce overcrowding in any single sanctuary and builds a more stable population over time.
