Mahindra plans to reveal a CNG version of its XUV 3XO compact sport utility vehicle on October 15, following a brand teaser that points to this release. This addition brings four powertrain choices to the model, joining current petrol, diesel and electric options. The vehicle currently provides two petrol choices including a 111 horsepower, 1.2-litre MPFI turbo-petrol motor and a 131 horsepower, 1.2-litre direct injection turbo-petrol motor.

Powertrain Details

The factory-fitted CNG kit is expected to work with the 111 horsepower MPFI engine because MPFI motors cost less to build and are easier to change for CNG use since fuel goes into the intake manifold. Adapting a direct injection engine for CNG costs more and involves extra complexity. Final output numbers have not been released yet.

Design Challenges

Questions remain about how Mahindra will fit the CNG cylinder into the vehicle since the SUV already features the smallest boot space in its class. Engineers might use a dual tank setup like the one made popular by Tata or place the tank underneath the boot area, which could need major redesign work.
