Veteran fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar is back in the Indian Twenty20 squad after a gap of four years. He will play in the upcoming series against New Zealand starting October 22. The 36-year-old pacer takes a spot in the team due to the absence of Jasprit Bumrah.

Selection Changes

Former chief selector Ajit Agarkar did not favor older players during his tenure, which kept Kumar out despite taking 17 wickets to help Royal Challengers Bengaluru win the Indian Premier League title. Once Agarkar left his post, interim head Pragyan Ojha and central zone selector R.P. Singh pushed for Kumar's inclusion. Former India player Sadagopan Ramesh called the return a big surprise that proves age is just a number. The squad also brings back spinner Varun Chakaravarthy.

Tour Schedule

India plays five Twenty20 matches in New Zealand from October 22 to November 1, beginning with the first game in Christchurch. The tour also includes five one-day internationals and two test matches. Shreyas Iyer will captain the Twenty20 side, with Tilak Varma as vice-captain.

Context

National cricket selectors often balance young emerging talent with experienced campaigners depending on current form and upcoming tournament conditions. Fast bowlers who excel in the powerplay overs remain valuable assets in the shortest format of the game.
