Veteran actor Nana Patekar passed away on Thursday at his home in Goa at the age of 75 following a cardiac arrest. His son Malhar Patekar confirmed the death, while medical staff at Manipal Hospital noted that attempts to revive him were unsuccessful after he was brought in following a medical emergency.

Final Hours

Patekar had messaged an acquaintance at around 2:30 am to state he felt unwell. That person arrived at his Goa residence by 4 am and found him in distress before arranging his transfer to the medical facility. Doctors performed continuous CPR, but he was declared dead at approximately 5:20 am, leading to formal medical-legal procedures and a post-mortem at Goa Medical College and Hospital involving his wife Neelakanti and son.

Tributes And State Honors

Tributes poured in from across the country, including a special message from the Iranian embassy remembering his iconic comedic role as Uday Shetty in the 2007 film Welcome. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised his versatile screen presence and his impact on Hindi and Marathi cinema. The government of Maharashtra announced that he will receive a state funeral in Pune, with his body transported there for public viewing before cremation at his farmhouse.

Career And Legacy

Born Vishwanath Patekar in Maharashtra, he started his artistic journey in Marathi theatre before making his screen debut in the 1978 film Gaman. Over a long career, he earned three National Film Awards and the Padma Shri for his contributions to the arts. While renowned for intense performances in serious films like Parinda, Krantiveer, and Ab Tak Chhappan, he also won a massive following for his comic timing alongside Anil Kapoor in Welcome and its sequel Welcome Back. Away from the silver screen, he dedicated time to social work, particularly supporting farmers and people facing severe distress.
