Electric vehicle maker VinFast is taking its first major step to enter the Indian two-wheeler market by signing letters of intent with over 50 electric scooter dealers. The brand previously entered India in 2025 for electric cars, and later showed e-scooters at the Auto Expo while patenting their designs.
Retail Expansion
VinFast and its dealer partners plan to set up more than 50 showrooms across 34 cities in 15 states and territories. The first target locations include Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, and Odisha. The company has not shared a launch timeline yet, but the initial line-up is expected to feature the patented Viper and Rasad electric scooters.
Market Competition
The company aims to tap into large regional markets where room for growth is wide open. In the 2025 to 2026 fiscal year, India recorded 21.41 million two-wheeler registrations, but electric vehicles made up just 6.54 percent of that total. VinFast will face stiff competition in this space from traditional legacy brands and newer start-ups like Bajaj, TVS, Hero, Suzuki, Yamaha, Ather, and River.
Context
Foreign electric vehicle companies often build local dealer partnerships and secure design patents long before their official product sales begin. This early groundwork helps brands set up a supply chain and service network to handle upcoming competition in large vehicle markets.
