Triple jumper Asha Ilango missed the Asian Games bronze medal by a whisker after tying with Chinese athlete Li Yi at 13.83 meters, losing the podium spot only because her opponent registered a better second-best jump.
The Journey
Asha had almost quit the sport last year after suffering stress fractures in both ankles and struggling to cross the 13-meter mark. Facing family pressure to get married at age 27 and lacking sponsors or a national medal, she planned to enroll for a coaching diploma at NIS Patiala. However, a friend convinced her to give training one more year.
The Turning Point
She began training under NIS-certified coach Nalvin Raja in Madurai, who completely rebuilt her technique from running basics to jumping rhythm. After seven months of continuous work, Asha opened her season with a personal best of 13.52 meters in Chennai, followed by 13.57 meters in Pune. She then jumped 13.89 meters at the Inter-State National Championships in Bhubaneswar, recording the third-best jump in Indian history and securing her Asian Games spot.
Context
Athletes often face immense physical and financial hurdles before breaking through to international levels, making proper coaching and mental resilience crucial for a successful comeback. Asha now plans to target the national record next year after finishing her best-ever season.
