UPDATE - follow-up to Missing a medal, finding new belief: the story of triple jumper Asha Ilango: Triple jumper Asha Ilango narrowly missed an Asian Games bronze medal after tying with Chinese athlete Li Yi at 13.83 meters, losing out because her opponent recorded a better second-best jump.
Training Turning Point
Before this success, Asha had nearly quit the sport following stress fractures in both ankles and a long slump around the 12.8-meter mark. At age 27, with her family suggesting marriage and a lack of sponsors or national medals, she planned to pursue a coaching diploma at NIS Patiala. However, a friend convinced her to give training one more year, leading her to Madurai-based NIS-certified coach Nalvin Raja, who helped her fix her running technique and rhythm from scratch.
Breakthrough Results
Working with Nalvin for seven months transformed her career, starting with a personal best of 13.52 meters in Chennai in May, followed by 13.57 meters in Pune, and a massive 13.89-meter jump at the Inter-State National Championships in Bhubaneswar. That jump secured her Asian Games spot, earned her first major national medal, and set the third-best mark in Indian history. At the National Open Championships, she equalled her personal best and consistently cleared the 13.5-meter mark.
Context
Major international multi-sport events like the Asian Games often serve as career-defining milestones for athletes from non-traditional sporting backgrounds, providing crucial global exposure. Structured coaching partnerships and targeted technical corrections frequently unlock dramatic performance leaps in seasoned track and field competitors.
