UPDATE - follow-up to Renault Duster hybrid bookings open ahead of October 17 launch: Renault has officially started bookings for the upcoming Duster hybrid across India for a token amount of Rs 21,000 ahead of its October 17 market launch. Customers can book the SUV through the official Renault India website or at any authorised dealership nationwide.

Powertrain and Performance

The new model uses the brand's E-Tech system, which draws from Renault's experience in Formula 1 racing. The setup combines a 1.8-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine with two electric motors consisting of a 20hp generator and a 49hp unit that powers the wheels directly. A 1.4kWh battery pack supports the system, delivering a total combined output of 160hp and 172Nm of torque. Because this is a strong hybrid system, the battery does not need an external charger and recharges automatically while the vehicle is being driven. Power goes to the wheels via a multi-mode automatic gearbox with fixed gear ratios that shifts as needed.

Efficiency and Competitors

According to ARAI-certified figures, the Duster hybrid delivers an impressive fuel efficiency of 29kpl, which is higher than the 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engines already available in the lineup. According to Rushlane, this mileage beats competitors like the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder hybrid and Maruti Grand Vitara hybrid, which offer 27.97kpl. Renault claims the vehicle can cover 80 percent of city driving on electric power alone by keeping the petrol engine off when it is not needed and using regenerative braking. Francisco Hidalgo, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Renault Group India, stated that the launch brings European E-Tech technology to Indian buyers while combining high mileage with the ease of not needing external charging. The hybrid powertrain is expected to fill the gap left by the absence of a diesel option and will compete directly with models like the Maruti Grand Vitara, Victoris, and Toyota Hyryder.

Context

Strong hybrid cars use both a fuel engine and electric motors to save fuel, especially in stop-and-go city traffic where electric power is most efficient. They do not need to be plugged into a charging station because they capture energy during braking and use the engine to recharge on the move. Major automakers in India are increasingly introducing hybrid options to offer better mileage as buyers look for lower running costs without the range worries of pure electric vehicles.
