Renault India has opened bookings for the Duster strong hybrid E-Tech 160 at Rs 21,000, ahead of its official market launch on October 17, 2026. Customers can book the SUV through the official Renault website or authorised dealerships across the country.

Powertrain Details

The Duster hybrid combines a 1.8-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine with two electric motors, a 20hp generator and a 49hp unit powering the wheels, alongside a 1.4 kWh battery pack. The setup produces a combined output of 160 PS and 172 Nm of torque. An intelligent multi-mode automatic gearbox manages the system, allowing the vehicle to operate on electric power under suitable conditions, recover energy through regenerative braking, and switch between electric and petrol propulsion without needing an external charger. According to Autocar India, the system draws from Renault's Formula 1 expertise and can cover 80 percent of city driving in electric mode.

Mileage And Rival Comparison

The ARAI-certified fuel efficiency stands at 29 km/l, giving the hybrid a substantial advantage over the existing Duster turbo-petrol options. The 1.0-litre petrol delivers 19.4 km/l, while the 1.3-litre petrol returns 17.7 km/l, meaning the hybrid offers about 49.5 percent higher mileage than the 1.0-litre version and 63.8 percent higher mileage than the 1.3-litre version. This certified mileage is also slightly higher than the 27.97 km/l offered by rival hybrid mid-SUVs like the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Maruti Grand Vitara, giving the Duster an advantage of 1.03 km/l.

Sales And Market Positioning

Francisco Hidalgo, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Renault Group India, stated that the launch brings European E-Tech technology to Indian buyers while combining 160 PS power with 29 km/l mileage. The hybrid powertrain is expected to boost Duster sales, which have been on a decline, and serves as an alternative for customers missing the diesel option from the original Duster. The current Duster petrol lineup is priced between Rs 10.49 lakh and Rs 18.69 lakh ex-showroom, though hybrid prices have not yet been announced. The SUV marks Renault's first E-Tech model in India under its futuREady roadmap.

Context

Strong hybrid vehicles use an onboard generator and regenerative braking to recharge their small batteries automatically, meaning owners never need to plug them into a charging station. This technology allows the car to run on battery power alone during slow-moving city traffic, which significantly cuts down fuel consumption compared to standard petrol engines. In the Indian mid-SUV segment, manufacturers increasingly rely on strong hybrid powertrains to offer diesel-like fuel economy without tailpipe emissions tied to traditional diesel motors.
