Indian-origin South African jurist Navanethem 'Navi' Pillay has won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the award to honor her work in promoting peace and international law.
Her Journey And Career
Born in South Africa to Indian parents of Tamil descent, Pillay grew up under apartheid and faced heavy discrimination. Early in her career, she defended Nelson Mandela and others who fought against apartheid. She later served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014. Her career also includes major legal work at international tribunals.
Landmark Legal Work
Pillay played a key role when the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda ruled that rape and sexual violence can count as a crime against humanity and genocide. In the same case, she helped achieve a legal breakthrough by charging a defendant with incitement to commit genocide purely for spreading propaganda. She is currently a judge on the International Court of Justice in a case accusing Myanmar of genocide.
Context
The Nobel Peace Prize is one of the world's most prestigious awards, given each year to individuals who do the most to unite nations and promote peace. Jurists like Pillay use international courts to hold powerful leaders accountable for war crimes and human rights abuses.
