Homegrown Indian Tech Brands Cross ₹60,000 Crore in Revenue, But Scaling Remains a Hurdles

India has 129 homegrown brands across gadgets, devices, appliances, and connected cars that together generate more than ₹60,000 crore in annual revenue. Yet, only 14 of these brands earn more than ₹500 crore, while just two cross ₹2,000 crore, according to the Viksit Tech 47 Report 2026 released by the India Mobile Congress and Techarc.
Growth Hurdles
The report estimates average annual revenue at about ₹465 crore per brand. Most of these businesses remain small because they are at early stages of evolution, trading or assembling products instead of engineering them. Faisal Kawoosa, chief analyst and co-founder of Techarc, noted that many companies stay at one stage for years or fail when competition grows, product cycles shorten, or capital runs out.
The TAME Model
The report uses the TAME model to track how brands evolve from Trade to Assemble, Manufacture, and Engineer. Brands that only trade finished products reach a revenue ceiling of roughly ₹500 crore. Assembly-led businesses rarely pass ₹5,000 crore, while manufacturing-led brands can scale to about ₹50,000 crore. True large-scale revenues in lakhs of crores come only from brands that engineer their own products and own their software and intellectual property.
Manufacturing and R&D
India's wider electronics production rose to ₹13.11 lakh crore in FY2025-26 from ₹1.90 lakh crore in FY2014-15, with exports hitting ₹4.24 lakh crore. However, domestic value addition stays near 17 percent because the country still imports key parts like displays, semiconductors, camera modules, and battery cells. Indian brands also hold only a low single-digit share of the domestic smartphone market.
Future Targets
The report calls for deeper ties between startups and schools, better component localisation, long-term capital access, and international distribution support. At a projected annual growth rate of 13 percent, the combined revenue of these 129 brands could hit ₹1.11 lakh crore by FY2031 and ₹2.04 lakh crore by FY2036. By 2047, the report sets a target of 50 Indian tech brands, each earning over ₹1 lakh crore a year.
Context
Building hardware and deep-tech businesses requires patience and heavy upfront investment in research and development. While India has successfully drawn global electronics factories through policy backing, shifting from assembly lines to original product design remains the next major hurdle for domestic firms.
