Will O'Rourke ruled out of India Tests, NZ eyes his return for Australia series

Will O'Rourke, the 25-year-old New Zealand fast bowler, will sit out the home Test series against India as a precaution while he continues rehab for a left hamstring tear and a calf strain. He had returned to international cricket earlier this year after a seven-month layoff for a back stress fracture, only to pick up the hamstring injury on the final day of the third Test versus England in June and then aggravate his calf in late-August training. The two-match series begins on 19 November, with the first Test in Wellington and the second in Christchurch, and follows a five-match T20I series and a five-match ODI series that start on 22 October and 4 November respectively. New Zealand head coach Rob Walter called the omission “disappointing” for O'Rourke, noting he was set to feature in both the ODIs and Tests, but said the team agreed he needs more time to rebuild his bowling load safely. O'Rourke helped New Zealand sweep India 3-0 in the 2024 tour, taking seven wickets at an average of 18.42. The coaching staff stressed that pace-bowling depth will be vital in the coming months, so they are taking a cautious approach to his return. Walter remains hopeful O'Rourke will be fit for the December series in Australia, aiming for a Plunket Shield appearance in late December and a possible debut in the opening Test in Perth on 9 December.
Context
Will O'Rourke's injuries have kept him out for most of the past year, and fast bowlers often need extended rest after hamstring and calf problems to avoid re-injury. New Zealand’s pace attack will rely on other bowlers for the India and Australia tours unless he recovers in time.
