Indian-origin South African jurist Navanethem “Navi” Pillay received the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday, the Norwegian Nobel Committee said. The prize recognised her work advancing peace and international law, especially her role in securing prosecutions for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. The committee highlighted a career that began with defending Nelson Mandela and other anti‑apartheid activists and later included judging landmark cases at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, where she served eight years, four as president, and helped define sexual violence as a form of genocide. Pillay, 85, is the first non‑white woman appointed to South Africa’s High Court and hails from a Tamil family whose ancestors arrived as Indian indentured labourers in the 1890s. She was born in 1941 in Natal, the fifth of eight children of Narrainsamy and Santhama Naidoo. On October 9 the award was announced, citing her instrumental contribution to international justice. Actor Kamal Haasan posted a note on X praising Pillay’s life story, calling it deeply moving and describing her rise from a modest family background to a pioneering jurist who fought apartheid and reshaped global law. He said the honor brings great pride to Tamils worldwide.

Context

The Nobel Peace Prize often honors individuals who have shaped global human‑rights norms; Pillay’s work on recognizing sexual violence as genocide reflects a broader trend of expanding definitions of war crimes in international courts.
