Actor Zayn Marie Displays Bruises After Mumbai Police Detention at Protest

Actor Zayn Marie and fellow film personalities Imran Khan and Lekha Washington spent a few hours in police custody after being picked up by law enforcement officials in Mumbai on Saturday. The trio visited August Kranti Maidan to join a demonstration called by the CJP, which lacked formal police clearance. Police authorities stated that they refused permission because court rules restrict protests to Azad Maidan alone, and noted that over 400 people faced detention during the crackdown. Meanwhile, organizers maintained that they had sent an email request for permission but received no reply from the department. Following their release, Zayn shared social media updates revealing visible bruise marks on her arms, legs, and fingers. In an online video post, she delivered a direct message questioning state pressure tactics. During their time in a police van, the group had posted lighthearted clips, including one where Zayn asked Imran if he had prior jail experience, to which he replied that current events made future imprisonment a possibility. Lekha also used Instagram to document their transit struggles, noting that officers initially blocked them from securing transport home before they eventually managed to leave.

Context

August Kranti Maidan holds major historical significance in Mumbai as the birthplace of the Quit India movement, making it a frequent site for public gatherings and demonstrations. Police forces in major metropolitan areas routinely restrict unauthorized assemblies to designated zones like Azad Maidan to manage traffic and maintain public order. High-profile detentions involving film actors often draw intense public attention and spark wider debates on freedom of expression and the right to protest.
